On 11th September 2024, the Kamau Wairuri Foundation visited two women's self-help group in Rwathia, Kangema District in Murang'a County, as part of its ongoing efforts to empower women economically. This activity is under our Economic Empowerment Program which is designed to uplift local communities by giving them valuable skills, expanding market opportunities and promoting economic self-sufficiency.
Ms Violent Wainaina, the Executive Director of the Foundation, engaged with the women on the importance of collective action in achieving financial independence and creating sustainable livelihoods. She highlighted the need for the women’s groups that were represented to be registered and organised in order for them to be able to benefit from the many development schemes that are geared towards the economic empowerment of Kenya.
Ms Wainaina emphasized on the need for grassroots women to enhance their financial literacy, particularly on savings and financial management. She encouraged the group to embrace a saving culture and work collectively to achieve larger economic goals, underscoring the power of unity in driving greater achievements.
In his turn, Dr Kamau Wairuri, the Founder and Patron of the foundation, congratulated the women for the steps they have already taken in building institutions that serve of vehicles for their collective endeavours. He encouraged those who had not already joined the groups to become members so that they can also enjoy the benefits.
The team heard from the women’s groups about the developmental concerns and committed to walk the journey of economic progress together.
Accordingly, in a gesture of solidarity and support, team also distributed essential supplies to the women and also made a financial contribution to the communal fund of the two groups, which they manage at the local level.
The women groups expressed their gratitude to the team and highlighted some of their needs, especially on capacity building and access to finance to help them achieve their goals. The team committed to arrange another session to co-create initiatives that can help them build their capacity even further.
